Since its inception in 2009, National Postdoc Appreciation Week (NPAW) recognizes the significant contributions that postdoctoral scholars make to U.S. research and discovery. To celebrate USC postdoctoral scholars, we’ve collaborated with USC Postdoctoral Association (PDA) and CHLA to bring you the following program. These events that are geared to support, recognize, and create awareness of USC’s postdoctoral community and their contributions to USC. Communications Workshop with Meghan McCarty (NPR Station KPCC Science Reporter/Producer) Appearances can be a great way to promote your research and brand yourself as an expert in your field. But switching from writing dense academic texts to worrying about “um’s” and “ah’s” can give anyone whiplash. What should you focus on when you explain difficult concepts to a broader audience? What turns a media interview from mediocre to magic? Career Essentials Workshop with Llewellyn Cox (Cofounder/CEO, LAb Launch) Need help making the jump into the job market? Sign up now for this 2-hour workshop- space is limited to 20 postdocs. You will learn CV/resume basics, tailoring applications and cover letters, and job seeking and interview basics for postdocs. Led by Dr. Llewellyn Cox, the cofounder and CEO of LAb Launch, who has extensive experience in corporate relations, research administration, science communications, and professional skills training. (2 sessions)

2014 Postdoc Photo/Art Contest

For this year’s theme, please submit a visual representation (and brief description) of your interpretation of the word “FOCUS.” Participants can submit photos taken with an iPhone, DSLRs, Point-and-Shoot Cameras, Instagram or other social media based photo app(s). Original art can also be submitted as jpeg, tiff, or psd files. The deadline to enter the contest is Friday, September 20th at 5pm PST. Please submit your entries by emailing postdocs@usc.edu.
